SF & Fantasy Magazines That Should Really Be In Your Life

When I first came into SF/F/Horror/dark fiction etc., it was through what some would say was the classic route: the long form novel.  As I got older, though, and settled into my career, time felt a bit more crunched. I then discovered short fiction: myriad stories you could digest quickly; lean prose and fully populated worlds created in a handful of pages. There’s an indelible art here: as a writer you’ve got to work harder with less room to make the reader care about your characters and their issues… all in 2000 words or less.

So as a reader, where can you find the best new short speculative fiction, with new stories made available monthly, quarterly, or annually? And as a writer, where do you submit your works to build up your CV?

Why, MAGAZINES of course!

Yes, they still exist. Yes, they are often available on multiple platforms! Print an e-editions, fully archived online, whatever makes you happiest. Many actually have the stories available to read online for free. But that isn’t going to keep these magazines alive and paying pro-rates.

So guess what? I’m going to make it easy for you, and I’m going to link to all of them in this post. I also link to them on our little blog sidebar, so you never have an excuse to forget about them again. I’ll also provide a handy link so you can subscribe with ease! Sound good? Subscribing to these magazines means more places for stories, more writers getting work, and keeping the genre alive and healthy. Many of these magazines and periodicals publish poetry, as well, and the more markets there are for genre poets, the better! I’d be pretty cross if any of these wonderful publications shut down, and you would feel their absence, trust me.

It’s definitely part of the Valkyrie Books dream to have these magazines available for print purchase in the store, as well as selling subscriptions on behalf of the magazines themselves. I’d be fairly bereft if some of them had disappeared by the time we open our doors. Let’s not see that happen!

*Note that this list is not exhaustive. Please let me know if I’m missing anyone; I’ll also include them in our static links. Thanks!
