C4 Comic Con 2015–IT’S ALIVE! | Valkyrie Books

C4 Comic Con 2015–IT’S ALIVE!

THAT’S RIGHT. It all started last year with a couple of doodles and a sweet dream, but this year I’m finally doing it. I’ve bought up 3 tables worth of space at C4 Comic Con, where Valkyrie Books, for the first time ever, will be REAL. No more fantasies (for now)–it’s happening.

Peter and I moved to Brandon, MB about a week and a half ago, and now we are overcome with space. So I took over the basement living room to start building. BUILDING WHAT YOU MAY ASK??

Last year at C4 Comic Con, while sharing a table with the ever-incredible Chadwick Ginther, I looked around at the kinetic energy we were experiencing. What an insane rush. It helped that we were surrounded by our friends, but I will never forget how hard and fast the inspiration flowed. From there, someone offhandedly mentioned (it was probably GMB Chomichuk) that I should bring Valkyrie Books to C4 next year…and in the heat of the crazy I said YES I SHOULD. I drew up all kinds of ideas, from a tiny book cart to an enormous shop with a huge ass roof to a viking-style tent. In the intervening year I must have drawn about 20 different versions of the space, until I finally came up with this concept.

Of course, a year has gone by, and so many things happened–I got married overseas, came back and got married here, quit my 9-5 job to become a full-time freelancer, took on massive responsibility with ChiZine Publications, moved all our stuff out of my apartment, then moved out here. As the months drew in, and I paid for my tables, I got more and more stressed. Maybe I should just pull out, try again next year this little voice in my head whispered, spreading huge loads of fucking doubt through me like a cancer.

Then I went to Artist’s Emporium and said ‘Fuck it,’ picked up five 8′ x 4′ foam core boards, dragged them out to Brandon, and got down to it.

The biggest set piece will be the front facade of the ‘store,’ and the doorway. Product tables will be set up in front of the awnings, as well as on the ‘inside’ of the shop. I’m also trying to improvise a fake ‘fireplace’ set piece to go inside. I’m hoping for lots of photo ops, and will have a running hashtag for Instagram and Twitter: #ValkyrieBooksC4

Purchases will be made using my new Square device, as well as the usual cash/cheque. Receipts will also be available. All stock will be round-priced, taxes included.

We will be in Artists Alley, and I’m so very excited to dress up and bring my little shop to life. I will be on hand every day, all day of the convention to not only sell, but to answer questions about the speculative fiction writing and publishing community in Winnipeg, and the ideas that Valkyrie Books would one day like to bring to the public. Who knows–maybe by C4 2016 we’ll be raising funds for a down payment via Kickstarter? The world is a weird and wonderful place. We’ll see what happens.

I’ve still got lots of work to do–promo materials to design and print, the store shingle/sign, and all of the other hinky things like tables, receipt books, and any other props to gather. Follow me on my delirious quest to make good on my hilariously strange ideas.

Also, check out a small video tour/explanation of the project below! I’m awkward and blathering, but it’s a nice primer on me and the shop.
